The mission of the Mobility & Networking Research (MNR) Group at Microsoft Research is to invent and research technologies that make Microsoft's networks, services, and devices indispensable to the world. The MNR group focuses on basic and applied research in all areas related to networked systems and mobile computing.
We are looking for an intern candidate to research and develop RF sensing systems over the summer of 2020. Graduate students with interest and experience in RFID sensor networks and their applications are encouraged to apply.
The ideal technical skills we are looking for in a candidate are:
  • Familiarity with RF communication and networks
  • Analog and digital circuit basics
  • Software Defined Radios
  • An understanding of antenna design
  • Basic programming and signal processing.

Applicants should demonstrate experience in low-level programming, system development and experimentation.

Responsibilities

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
Interns will collaborate with one or more mentors on a full life cycle research project, from setting project direction to research publication. Thus, interns will be responsible for participating in background research, some combination of project development, testing, deployment, and/or analysis, and paper writing.

Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related STEM field.
  • Must have worked on at least one project related to sensor system development and/or RF communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in hands-on prototyping with COTS devices
  • Experience in RFID and sensor systems is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas.
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with other researchers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Ability to think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions.

Demonstrated ability to perform independent explorative research.
